CHYPS - Chapel Street Young People

Report on last CHYPS night:

Last Saturday at CHYPS we had an epic game of Hide'n'Seek. We played some variations on the traditional 'oldie but a goodie'. The blackout edition, where we turned out all the lights in the complex was awesome. And eventually everyone was found!

Enzro told us some stories of when he was a child, including how he was afraid of the dark for many years. We heard some really bad Dad jokes, and some good ones too - thanks to Ruard and everyone who contributed! Roslind and Enzro finished off our God-time with an awesome song, and it was great to see some of our youth singing along.

Thanks to Anne (Jack's Mum) and Carol for serving up a delicious supper of hot savouries, chocolate fish and chocolate cupcakes - delicious!

Hope you all have an awesome month, until the next CHYPS... go well and remember that you're pretty special, and God loves you just the way you are. :o)

CHYPS update

A couple of months ago, our Youth Group, CHYPS (Chapel Street Young People's group) met at the Chapel Street Centre for a fun night of games and challenges, not to mention a scrummy supper!

Best Album Cover

One of the many challenges for our teams at FISH last night, was to create the best album cover. The teams had ten minutes to come up with a name for their album, create an image and photograph it. Here are three rather awesome looking covers. I wonder what their music would be like?

Hi God, it's Me

Our Awesome Kids talked about how we communicate with God. Is there a special way to pray? Do you have to have big, long words? Do you have to be in a certain place, or sit or kneel a certain way? Eyes open or closed?

Do you have to use a special code to talk to God? Mel tried walkie-talkies, cell phone, a big thick thesaurus, a code-cracker and secret spy writing... but the Awesome Kids had the answer:

You don't need any of these things to talk to God. You just need to say, "Hi God, it's me." God knows us, everything about us, and all that is going on in our life. All we need to do is to check in with God, tell Him how we're feeling, chat to Him just like you would your best friend or family member. God is always listening.

Check out the cool artwork in the Chapel Street Gallery - we experimented with different ways of communicating, using crayon resist and watercolour paint. We also tried some secret spy lemon juice writing, but Mel learnt the hard way not to hold the paper too close to the flame! Oops!

Matariki

This morning we celebrated Matariki, with music and art. Our wonderful ukulele group, AbsolUKE, led the congregation in the Matariki Macarena (complete with actions) and we created some Star Jars and Starry Night paintings.

Check out the video from MatCH. Thanks to Izak and George for the filming and production.

Here is the prayer, which was read so beautifully by Bella:

Loving God,
You are an amazing God, and the stars remind us of how awesome you are. Thank you for loving us, for being our friend and never giving up on us.
Thank you for the special people in our lives, who have guided us, shaped us and loved us. Those who have encouraged us along the way and helped us to become the people we are today. We thank you God for what they have given to us - wisdom, guidance and love.
Help us to shine Your light and Your love into the world.
Amen

Make sure you check out the marvelous Matariki art in the Chapel Gallery!

Kites for Pentecost!

Our Awesome Kids made kites to celebrate Pentecost.

Just as the wind sends kites off out and up into the sky, the Holy Spirit sends us out off into the world to share God's love.

We can hear the wind, we can feel the wind, but we can't see it. We can see what it does. It's a bit like the Holy Spirit. We can feel God's awesome presence, God's love and it gives us strength and helps us to be brave to go out into the world and do amazing things.

Check out the video above, made by MaTCH - Media and Tech at Chapel Street. Thanks Izak!

National Paper Plane Day!

This morning we learnt about Lydia, who was an EPIC GIRL BOSS in the bible!

Lydia was the first European Christian, a successful businesswoman, head of her household, a person of great faith, and a great listener.

We also made purple paper plane prayers, which we launched into the congregation.

Thanks to MaTCH for another awesome video:

Our House

On Sunday, our Awesome Kids acted out the fabulous story Our House, by Michael Rosen.

George (Izak) was in the house. He wouldn't let any of the other children play in the house. "This house isn't for girls," he said. "This house isn't for twins, or people with glasses, or small people, or people who like tunnels." So selfish!

But, when George had to go away (to go to the toilet), everyone piled on into the house! When George came back, he was not happy!

Luckily, our story had a happy ending, and George came to realise that his house was "Our House", and it was for girls, boys, small people, big people, people with glasses, people who like tunnels... because this house was for everyone!

The story from the bible today was the story of the Samaritan Woman at the Well. This is a story about a woman who was not very popular. She was so unpopular that she came to the well to get water in the middle of the day when she thought no one else would be there to say mean things to her or call her names. People thought she was a real loser.

But, Jesus was at the well and talked with her, even though other people thought he shouldn't bother. Jesus treated her with respect and kindness - nobody treated her that way!

Jesus asked the woman for a drink of water. He told her it takes more than food and water to make us feel "alive". Jesus says what keeps him "alive" is loving like God loves.

In this story, this is about making friends with a real outsider, and making her feel really different, really good, about herself.

Jesus wants us to share God's love with everyone, and remember that although every one of us is different, God loves each one of us the same. God's awesome living love is poured out for everyone, making us all feel "alive"!

Who am I?

On 5 May our story was about a guy who was the biggest bully on the block. Amazingly, he was turned into a leader of the church, by Jesus.

It was a story of incredible change... and forgiveness.

We also talked about names, and our Awesome Kids played a 'Guess Who' name-band game.

Celebrating Special People

On Sunday, Mother's Day, we celebrated those special people in our lives - parents, grandparents,  step-parents, foster parents, aunts, uncles, caregivers, church leaders - all those people who have been there for us, loving us, guiding us and helping us along the way.

We put together some little gift baskets to say thank-you and handed them out at the end of the church service. You can watch a video of this, courtesy of MaTCH (Media and Tech @ Chapel Street).

Here is the prayer which was so beautifully led by Angie and Peatalisa:

Loving God,

No family is perfect... we have good days and bad days, joys and sorrows, fun times and bad arguments. Help me to shine Your light into my family. Help us to forgive quickly, and LOVE strongly.

Remind us that every believer in Christ is part of my family. They are my brothers and sisters through You. Help us to grab opportunities to show love to others, to brighten others' days and to help them in any way we can.

Thank you for our families, our church family, and the special people in our lives, who love us.

Amen.

Holy Humour Sunday!

Check out the video below...

Thanks to MATCH
(Media and Tech @ Chapel Street)
for the video this morning

This morning was Holy Humour Sunday. Since the 15th Century, churches have celebrated the Sunday following Easter with Holy Humour Sunday. It is an opportunity for Christians to celebrate the greatest miracle in history - Jesus's resurrection. We have the best reason to be joyful!

It also gives us the opportunity to celebrate, and give thanks for, the times when we have got through troubles and come back from sad moments in our lives, with the help of Jesus's love. It's not to say we can't feel down when things aren't going right... we all have times when we're sad, worried, anxious or angry. Jesus is with us in all of that, right there with us, loving us.

Good humour, laughter, a twinkle in the eye, are one of God's many gifts that help us cope with some struggles in life... especially the smaller, annoying little problems. So, enjoy this little collection of jokes from our Awesome Kids and remember that JESUS is the LIFE of the party!

He is Risen!

The Awesome Kids from Christchurch North Methodist explored the Easter Story using Resurrection Eggs - each plastic egg contained a symbol from the Easter story. We decorated shortbread biscuits (egg and heart shaped) with icing and sprinkles, and had an easter egg hunt. Our youth media team made a short video which you can watch on the previous post.

After the service we enjoyed an all-age scavenger/egg hunt. In groups we searched for members of the congregation who had the items we needed to collect. Some were easy to find, but others were very good at hiding and led teams on a chase around the garden! We looked for the clues in the bible verses we were given and the final clue led us to the person who had the items representing the empty tomb - hollow chocolate eggs!

He is Risen!
He is Risen indeed!

Easter Egg / Scavenger Hunt on Sunday at the Chapel Street Centre!

Join us this Easter Sunday for a special Easter Celebration Service at 10am.
The Chapel Street Band will be playing, we will be making some delicious Easter treats in Awesome Time, and after the service the whole congregation is invited to join in an Easter Egg / Scavenger Hunt! Everyone welcome!

Hosanna!

And unlike the character in last week's Palm Sunday puppet show, "Hosanna!" does not mean, "Hose Anne!"

In today's story from the bible, we learnt about a very special parade. The people lined the streets, waved palm branches and shouted "Hosanna!" as Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey. They were shouting "Hosanna!" which meant, "Hooray! Jesus is here, our saviour!"

At the Chapel Street Centre this morning, we had our own parade, starting from the carpark and entering the church waving our kiwi version of palm branches (ferns) and singing 'Hosanna!'

During Awesome Time we painted hand-print palm branch, and laminated fern bookmarks.

Palm Sunday Procession

THE YES

Our drama group at camp presented the wonderful story, THE YES, by Sarah Bee.

The Yes set off to explore the big wide Where. But the Where was home to the Nos, who travel in packs and discourage the Yes at every turn. They told the Yes that the tree was too big to climb, the bridge too rickety to cross, the woods too scary to explore. But even just one Yes is stronger than countless Nos.

In life, we are faced with many obstacles to overcome… choices, where we have to decide YES or NO. Sometimes it’s scary. That’s OK. Being brave doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to be a bit scared. There’s a quote we heard at camp which goes:
“There can be no courage unless you’re scared.”

So, I think we just have to remember that Jesus is there with us, every step of the way, Jesus gives us strength and helps us to be brave. He's there saying, 'Yes! You can do it! I believe in you!'

We need to listen for God's voice, to know what path to follow. We need to keep faith in God's everlasting love that strengthens us.

Jesus wants us to have the courage to be ourselves, to try new things, to stand up for what is right, to be kind to one another, and to reach out and share the love of God with everyone.

Camp Service

On 24 March, we had our Camp Service at the Chapel Street Centre. This is a service led by the people who were at our annual Church Camp, which was held in February at the Waipara Riverside Campsite.

At church camp, the campers plan and lead the worship service on the Sunday morning. Everyone pitches in and does something to contribute to the service. We choose which group we'd like to help with... it could be the team who cleans and prepares the hall for the service, arranges flowers, or the group who chooses the bible readings, prayers and leads them. There was also the drama group and the music team. We each have about 30 minutes to plan and organise or practice, then after morning tea our service begins.

We then re-create the service for the rest of the congregation, which was what we did on March 24th.

BRAVE
Our theme for camp was BRAVE.  Bravery is not the absence of fear… it is moving forward in spite of it.’

There are awesome kinds of courage, and everyday kinds of courage that ordinary people show all the time.

At camp, in teams, we faced a number of challenges… some that required us to do things outside our comfort zone, to try new things, to reach out to help someone else, and to trust our teammates.

There was the traditional camp waterslide and flying fox, and other challenges saw us tackle obstacle courses, melt ice with our bare hands, and collect coloured balls whilst blindfolded -following the directions from our teammates.

In our concert on the Saturday night, many of our campers overcame nerves to perform an act to entertain the rest of us. There were dancers, singers, musicians, a karate item, jokes and skits. Who could forget the Invisible Bench Skit?

So, our camp and our worship service was a celebration of the moments, big and small, that bring out the hero in each of us, where we shine the light of God's love, and live in Jesus's way.

Blessing of the Backpacks

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Blessing of the Backpacks and our first Awesome Time of 2025.
