Last Sunday, Isabella was chosen to be a leader for God. But, before we sent her out into the world to do God's work, we had to make sure she was ready.
I thought she was too young, and maybe didn't have enough experience, perhaps she didn't know enough, and was pretty sure she might get hurt.
So, I loaded poor Bella up with lots of stuff in a massive backpack... she had a Question & Answer Book, a Dictionary for Advanced Learners (in case she needed to use some big words), a First Aid book and First Aid Kit, some food, insect repellent, and then of course she wore knee pads, helmet and a high-vis vest.
After all that, I was still worried she might get hurt so I wrapped her up in bubble wrap.
"But Mel, there's just one problem!" said Bella. "I'm supposed to be reading the prayer this morning, and I can't do it like this!"
"Where's your prayer?" I asked.
"In my pocket!" said Bella.
Uh oh. She could hardly get to her pocket, encased in bubble wrap, and it would have been difficult getting up to the lectern like that too. There was only one thing for it, we had to remove all the protective gear and equipment, and let Bella go out there just as she is.
Because, that's the thing. It doesn't matter if we're young or old, strong or weak, shy or brave... God uses as just as we are, to be leaders in the world. We are enough, we are good enough, strong enough, brave enough... we just have to listen for God's voice in all that we do, so that we can go out and share God's love with our community and the world.
And, the really cool thing is that wherever we go, God is there with us, helping us. Think about all the places you will go in the coming week... school, work, library, supermarket, sports field, squash court, dance lessons, gymnastics, playground - in all those places, God is there with you!
Afterwards, our Awesome Kids made some compasses with Paul, just using a magnet, a nail, a little piece of bubble wrap and some water!
We also made some map art, using some awesome maps Carol found for us in the second-hand bookstore.
We remembered that wherever we go in the world, God is always with us, in each place, every step of the way, helping us live in love.
